Child psychologists call for wider use of play therapy

The new results, published today in the journal Child Development, indicate that children with autism have higher scores on a standard cognitive function, the development of which is significantly delayed for some children.

Although research has not provided definitive answers to the question of whether play therapy reduces the likelihood that autism-like behaviours will develop, the study found that for some children with autism, the therapy had an effect of reducing the onset of behaviours for which there was a lack of an association with the symptomatology.

"This is not a new finding, nor one that we were prepared to report before we started the project," said Professor John Mackie, a developmental psychologist at the University of Cambridge.

"For those that are already on treatment, this finding offers a possible alternative route to long-term treatment without any additional clinical commitment and with the possibility that the therapeutic outcome will be less than anticipated."

The team, led by Professor David Walker from the University of Liverpool, also found that some children with ASD did not benefit from autism play therapy.

The team also observed a high risk of being diagnosed with the disorder in some children who were not initially diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders such as Asperger's, who were receiving play therapy. The team are now investigating whether other potentially protective factors, such as children with a greater propensity towards social isolation as their autistic peers are diagnosed, may also underplay this risk.

For the study, the team used data from the UK's national Child Development Survey from 2004-2006, which revealed that children's cognitive performance was delayed between the ages of three and four years for children with autism. Children who received a form of "preventive" and "intervention" play therapy were more likely to continue to have these delayed scores when compared with children not on the intervention.

The findings suggest that early intervention should provide benefits to these children, as well as to those that were not treated for their delay, Prof Walker said.

The project was made possible by a grant to the Russell Foundation.

Spy fears raised over chinas brisbane consulate

The two consulates will soon share another room.

The department said it would have a "significant" reduction in staffing over the next year and that staffing rates would be capped.

"This will mean reducing services for the most vulnerable people in our community."

But it was understood the reductions were not related to a $4 million increase in the $50 million department was hoping to hire by the end of next month.

"The department is pleased to have decided to cut our staffing levels to make sure our vulnerable population services are available quickly," it said in a statement.

It noted there would be no significant changes to services at consulates.

But some of those services - including counselling and social work - were expected to be curtailed.

The decision meant about 90 per cent of women and children who sought help at consulates would also face waiting rooms at their hotel.

The department said it was aware of some people's concerns.

It said staff are expected to respond on site "well within their capacity".

"But in circumstances where staff are not available for a period of time, services will be provided to other locations on site," it said.

The department said the staff cuts will provide a "much needed financial boost" for the state and the health department.
